Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a childs future success more than their family circumstances their parents educational background or their income.

. The city of Madrid Spain has been the first city to be named World Book Capital in 2001. Dressing up is the most popular way to encourage this. NHD was asked by HISTORY and the World War I Centennial Commission to develop a teacher resource to connect teachers and students to the best research and resources for teaching the 100th anniversary of World War I.

Cities designated as UNESCO World Book Capital undertake to carry out activities with the aim of encouraging a culture of reading and diffusing its values in all ages and population groups in and out of the national borders. Teachers have told us its one of the key ways reluctant readers engage with the day and children tell us they find it a useful way to pick. NHD worked with partner organizations including HISTORY the National Archives and Records Administration the Library of Congress the Smithsonian.

Our mission is to promote reading for pleasure offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. The important thing is that the day is fun and that children have the chance to talk about what theyre reading. World Book Day changes lives through a love of books and shared reading.
